Spendor LS3/5a

Original Factory Matched Pair

You already know all about these so we won’t be boring you with a long-winded essay.

Here is an early gold badge pair - factory matched, with consecutive serial numbers 4019 & 4020, which date these late 1985 / early 1986. They are all original and unmolested and sound exactly as they should. Not only in full working order but also in excellent physical condition and a credit to their very fussy original owner.

The following interesting information regarding LS3/5a impedance is directly from Spendor:-

“Originally, Rogers and Goodmans classified nominal impedance as 15 ohms, whereas Spendor classified as 8 ohms. There was no difference - it was just the way we interpreted the results when testing.  Because the LS3/5a BBC specification used an 8 ohm bass unit and tweeter, and as the impedance drops close to 8 ohms, we preferred to classify the nominal impedance as 8 ohms.

The BBC changed the bass unit and crossover of the LS3/5A in 1987 (from serial no.7000) and thereafter all license holders were instructed to classify the nominal impedance as 11 ohms.  The changes were made to improve the consistency and to bring the speakers back to the original specification.”
